Large or small crystals form when lava/magma is cooled.
Lava cooles much quicker than magma, because it is above the Earth's crust, therefore producing smaller crystals.
On the other hand, Magma cools slower, because the temperature is higher beneath the Earth's crust, producing larger and easier to see crystals.
